Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a two-lane highway, the center line is two solid yellow lines. The car ahead of you goes 10 mph below the limit, and the oncoming lane is clear for a long way. What should you do?
A follows B on a straight two-lane highway. The two center lines are solid yellow; B is identified as 10 mph below the limit.
Correct answer: Stay behind the car until the center line markings allow a pass from your side.
Why
Two solid yellow center lines show a two-way road where no driver in either direction may cross the lines to pass. These zones are marked where passing is especially dangerous, for example near hills, curves, intersections and driveways, so obey the lines even when the road looks clear. South Dakota law prohibits a pass in a zone that signs or lines mark as no-passing (SDCL 32-26-37 and 32-26-39).
