On a dry road in daylight, the car ahead passes a road sign. You count, and your front bumper reaches the same sign at "one thousand two." What should you do?
A’s front bumper is level with a roadside sign after a two-second count. B is ahead on the dry two-lane road in daylight.
Correct answer: Slow down to at least four seconds, because a two-second gap is too close.
Why
A time gap grows in feet as your speed increases, so the count works at any speed. Pick a fixed object, such as a sign or a pole, and count from the moment the vehicle ahead passes it until you reach it. If you get there before "one thousand four," slow down and count again at another point. Four seconds gives you time to see a problem, react and brake without a crash.
