You approach an intersection with no traffic signal. A person who holds a white cane out in front starts to cross the street ahead of you. What does South Dakota law require?
Blue A approaches an intersection without traffic signals. A pedestrian labeled B begins crossing from the right corner with a white cane held forward, shown again in an enlarged detail. The crossing has no zebra paint, no selected stop halo and no bypass route.
Correct answer: Come to a full stop before the crossing, and go only when the person is safe.
Why
A person who is blind cannot see your vehicle or judge when you will stop. The manual also says not to sound the horn near blind pedestrians, because it can confuse or startle them. Wait until the person has finished crossing before you move.
