Before a trip, you put a penny head first into the deepest groove of a tire's tread. You can see all of Lincoln's head. What does this tell you?
A head-first penny sits in a tire tread groove. All of Lincoln’s inverted head is visible, with a larger detail of the same penny and tread. No replacement instruction or tread verdict appears.
Correct answer: The tread is too worn, so replace the tire before you drive on it
Why
Tread grips the road and moves water away from under the tire. Worn tires make stops longer, make turns harder on wet roads, and make hydroplaning and flats more likely; South Dakota law also sets a minimum tread depth of 2/32 of an inch. Check tire pressure with a gauge about once a month, when the tires are cold, and match the PSI on the door jamb sticker.
