You drive toward a crosswalk in the middle of a block. Above the road is a pedestrian hybrid beacon: two red lights side by side above one yellow light. All of its lights are dark, and no one is in or near the crosswalk. What should you do?
Blue A approaches an empty midblock crosswalk. The overhead pedestrian hybrid beacon has three dark lamps. A separate enlarged detail shows its two-over-one arrangement with all lamps dark. No path or stopping position is selected.
Correct answer: Drive through at a safe speed, because a dark beacon does not tell you to stop
Why
A pedestrian hybrid beacon stays dark until a person pushes the button. It then shows flashing yellow, steady yellow and steady red; at steady red you stop and stay stopped while people cross. At alternating flashing red, you stop, then go if the crosswalk is clear. A dark beacon is not a broken traffic signal, but you must still yield to anyone in the crosswalk.
