You check your tires with a tread-depth gauge. One tire has only 1/32 inch of tread left, but the weather is dry. What should you do?
Correct answer: Replace the tire before you drive; 1/32 inch is below the 2/32-inch minimum.
Why
Tread grooves move water away from the tire so that the rubber can grip the road; with too little tread, a car can hydroplane and needs more distance to stop. The Texas handbook sets a minimum tread depth of 2/32 inch for all vehicle tires. Texas ended the yearly safety inspection for most passenger cars on January 1, 2025, so no inspector will find worn tires for you; check them yourself.
