You will carry a load of loose gravel in a pickup bed on city streets. The gravel is piled above the top of the bed's sides. What must you do?
A close detail of blue pickup A shows loose gravel heaped above the bed sidewalls. The tailgate and load-fastening areas are outside this initial close view. No cover, fastening instruction, speed or water treatment is shown.
Correct answer: Close the tailgate and tie down a cover, since the gravel can blow over the top.
Why
Gravel, sand, dirt and wood chips that fall from a vehicle can break windshields, cause crashes and damage the road. The bed must be enclosed on both sides, at the front and at the rear, and it may have no holes or cracks. The cover rule does not apply to a load that is completely enclosed or that cannot blow or spill over the top, and farm products in their natural state are not loose material under this law.
