Passing target: 70% (28/40)
You tie a ladder to the roof rack of your passenger car so that it sticks out past the side. You measure how far it extends beyond the body and fenders. Which of these positions is allowed?
Four equal panels show possible positions of the same roof-rack ladder on a north-facing blue car. A shows four inches past the left side; B five inches past the right; C eight inches past the right; D six inches past the left. Each enlarged body-edge detail uses the same scale. All options have equal styling; none is marked permitted.
Correct answer: 5 inches past the right side
Why
The left side of your car is next to oncoming and passing traffic, so the limit there is smaller: 3 inches, against 6 inches on the right. A load that extends farther can hit mirrors, cyclists, pedestrians or signposts that your car would otherwise clear. For a larger load, use a truck or trailer that can carry it within the limits.
