You borrow a small utility trailer to move furniture with your car. The trailer connects to a ball hitch on the car. What else does Texas law require for the connection?
A neutral close view shows the trailer’s ball coupler and retaining pin. The wider connection area is outside this view. No safety chains, chain instruction or weight comparison is shown.
Correct answer: Approved safety chains from the trailer to your car, in addition to the hitch.
Why
Safety chains hold the trailer to your vehicle if the main hitch comes apart, so that a loose trailer does not roll into other traffic. The Department of Public Safety approves the type of chain for the weight of the trailer and the way to attach it. The rule does not apply to a trailer used for agricultural purposes or to a trailer operated under the federal motor carrier safety rules.
