After a heavy storm, water flows across a low spot on your road. It looks about a foot deep, and a pickup truck just drove through it. What should you do?
A approaches water flowing across both lanes at a low spot. Silver pickup B is already on dry pavement beyond the water. The card says it looks about a foot deep and B just crossed; no safe driving path or depth ruler is shown.
Correct answer: Turn around and take another route, because this much water can float a car
Why
About 6 inches of water reaches the bottom of most cars and can cause a loss of control, and about 12 inches can float many cars. Moving water can also hide a road or bridge that has washed away, so another vehicle's crossing tells you nothing about what your car can do. Turn around and use another route; if your car stalls in rising water, get out fast and go to higher ground.
