Passing target: 70% (28/40)
At 55 mph on a two-lane road, you drift and your right wheels drop off the pavement onto a soft shoulder. The pavement edge is a few inches higher than the shoulder. What should you do?
Blue A straddles the edge of a two-lane road, with its right wheels on the soft shoulder. A separate cross-section identifies the lower edge beside A. The card gives 55 mph and a pavement edge a few inches higher. No return route, braking action or reduced speed is shown.
Correct answer: Hold the wheel firmly, ease off the gas, and steer back after you slow down
Why
A quick jerk of the wheel to climb over a raised pavement edge can throw the car across the center line or roll it over. Grip the wheel, take your foot off the gas, and brake gently so that the car slows while it stays straight on the shoulder. When your speed is low, check the traffic behind you and then ease back onto the pavement.
