You will drive your 20-month-old nephew to the store. Your car has an active front passenger air bag. How must he ride?
An empty cutaway view of blue car A shows the front and back seats. A card says a 20-month-old child will ride and the front passenger air bag is active. No child seat or location is selected.
Correct answer: In a rear-facing seat with a harness, in the back seat of the car.
Why
Vermont's child restraint law follows the child's age: under 2, rear-facing with a harness; under 5, a harnessed seat that faces the rear or the front; under 8 and out of a harness, a booster seat; and under 18, at least a safety belt. A child under 13 must ride in the back seat when practical. Car seats protect best when they are installed correctly, so have yours checked at a free child safety seat inspection site.
