Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You drive in the right lane of I-89. Ahead, a tow truck with flashing amber lights is stopped on the right shoulder. A car in the left lane beside you prevents a safe lane change. What must you do?
A is in the right interstate lane, with silver car C beside it in the left lane. White tow truck B stands on the right shoulder with amber beacon.
Correct answer: Proceed with caution and slow to a safe speed as you pass, because you cannot change lanes safely
Why
Police officers, emergency crews and tow workers at the roadside work close to fast traffic. A lane change away from them, or a lower speed, gives them more space and more time. The 2024 manual tells drivers who cannot change lanes to slow to 20 mph below the speed limit, but the law itself sets no number: it requires a reasonable, safe and prudent speed for the conditions.
