A driver wants to put a smoke-tinted plastic cover over the rear number plate. What does the Vermont law in force since July 1, 2026 say?
Correct answer: It is not allowed, because no material may cover the plate's numbers or letters.
Why
Vermont law requires number plates to be securely fastened, kept clean, and completely unobscured and legible at all times. Since July 1, 2026, the law also forbids coloring, tinting or changing the numbers, letters or background of a plate, and covering any number or letter with any material or substance. The rear plate must also be lit so that it can be read from at least 50 feet.
