Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You drive at 40 mph on a dry road. The car ahead passes a road sign, and you count the seconds until you reach the same sign. What is the least count that the Virginia following-distance rule accepts at this speed?
A follows B at 40 mph on a dry two-lane road. B has passed a fixed roadside sign. Separate enlarged actor details identify the cars.
Correct answer: Three seconds, the gap for 35 to 45 mph
Why
The gap gives you time to see a problem and to steer or brake before you reach it. At higher speeds, your car goes farther while you react and brake, so the rule adds a second for each higher speed range. Add more seconds in bad weather, in heavy traffic, on poor pavement or when your vehicle is in poor condition. The manual says that these gaps do not work if you drive faster than 70 mph.
