Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You are in a left-turn lane. The signal for your lane shows a flashing yellow arrow. An oncoming car is close to the intersection, and the crosswalk that you will cross is empty. What does the signal let you do?
A approaches in a left-turn lane while its signal flashes a yellow left arrow. Silver car B approaches in the opposite direction, and the crosswalk across the receiving street is empty.
Correct answer: Turn left after the oncoming car goes by and the way is clear
Why
A flashing yellow arrow tells you that oncoming traffic can still move through the intersection. If you misjudge the speed of an oncoming vehicle, a severe side crash can occur. Look carefully for road users that are hard to see, such as motorcycles, bicycles and mopeds. Virginia law lets traffic on a flashing amber arrow turn with reasonable care (§ 46.2-833), and a left-turning driver must yield to close oncoming vehicles (§ 46.2-825).
