You are driving your pickup truck to a friend's house on public roads. A 14-year-old wants to ride in the truck bed, which has a camper shell. What does Virginia law say about this ride?
Correct answer: It is not allowed, because no one under 16 may ride in a pickup's cargo area
Why
A person in a truck bed has no seat belt and can be thrown out in a sudden stop, a turn or a crash. The law has narrow exceptions only for authorized parades and for farm work between fields. Also, never let children ride in the luggage area of a hatchback, a station wagon or a van.
