The posted limit is 55 mph. Dense fog lets you see only a short distance ahead, but other cars still drive at 55 mph. What does Virginia law require of you?
A follows two cars through dense fog. An exact official 55 mph sign and the stated speed of other traffic are shown.
Correct answer: Slow to a speed that is safe for the fog, even if it is far below 55
Why
Fog makes it hard to see and to judge distance, so the manual tells you to slow down even in light fog. Under § 46.2-861, a speed that is too fast for the conditions is reckless driving, whatever the posted limit. A slow speed is legal when it is necessary for safe operation (§ 46.2-877). Use low beams and follow the road edge markings.
