Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You hitch a small utility trailer to your SUV. The coupler is locked on the ball, the pin is in place and the trailer lights work. The safety chains lie loose on the trailer tongue. What must you do before you drive?
A trailer hitch close-up shows a locked coupler and pin, plugged electrical cable, and two loose safety-chain hooks resting on the trailer tongue. The vehicle’s chain attachment loops are empty and unmarked.
Correct answer: Attach the safety chains between the trailer and your SUV
Why
If the hitch fails, the chains keep the trailer with your vehicle, so it does not run into other traffic. Before each trip, also check the ball-mount pin, the coupler, the electrical plug, and the brake lights, turn signals and license plate lights. A vehicle that tows a trailer needs about twice as long to pass, stop, accelerate and turn, and if the trailer starts to sway, slow down.
