You drive a car on a paved two-lane road in the countryside, outside any city or town. You have not seen a speed limit sign. What is the maximum legal speed?
Correct answer: 55 mph
Why
Virginia sets default limits for roads with no speed signs: 25 mph in business and residence districts, 35 mph on unpaved roads and 55 mph on other roads. A posted sign always replaces the default. You must still drive slower when weather, traffic or road conditions make the limit unsafe.
