School Zones, Railways & Work AreasStandalone practice
A long freight train has just cleared a railroad crossing. The gates are still down and the red lights still flash, but you see no other train. What should you do?
A is already behind a lowered rail gate, as the train has passed but the red lights still operate.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing and the gates are fully up
Why
Signals can stay on after one train passes because another train is close. Trains can come from either direction on any track, and they are often nearer, quieter and faster than they seem. RCW 46.61.340 requires you to stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail and to wait until you can cross safely.
