You drive in the right lane of a freeway with two lanes in your direction. Ahead, a tow truck with its warning lights flashing is stopped on the right shoulder to help a driver. The left lane is clear. What should you do?
A approaches a tow truck with warning lights on the right shoulder; the adjacent left lane is clear.
Correct answer: Slow down, and move into the left lane, away from the tow truck, when it is safe
Why
Roadside workers stand only a few feet from fast traffic, and a free lane gives them space. By law, the emergency zone is the lanes next to the vehicle from 200 feet before it to 200 feet after it. If you cannot change lanes safely, slow to at least 10 mph below the posted limit, and never drive faster than 50 mph in the zone.
