A friend asks you how to ride a bicycle on a two-lane road that has no bike lane. What is correct in West Virginia?
A two-way road has no bicycle lane. A separate trip-planning inset shows bicyclist B without assigning a position on the roadway.
Correct answer: Ride with traffic, near the right edge of the road, unless you must avoid a hazard.
Why
Pedestrians walk facing traffic, but bicyclists ride with traffic, because a bicycle is a vehicle on the road. Drivers who turn or pull out of a driveway look for traffic from the expected direction, so they often do not see a wrong-way rider. Riders on a roadway also obey signs and signals, signal turns and stops, and ride not more than two abreast (17C-11-5).
