While you drive, the engine temperature warning light comes on, and steam rises from under the hood. What should you do?
Correct answer: Pull off the road, turn off the engine, and let it cool before you open the radiator cap.
Why
An overheating engine can be damaged, and hot coolant under pressure can spray out and burn you. When the warning light or gauge shows overheating, leave the road, switch the engine off, and keep the radiator cap on until the engine has cooled. In slow traffic, you can help prevent overheating by shifting to neutral and briefly racing the engine during stops.
