Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You are driving at night in steady rain. The car ahead passes a mile marker, and you reach the marker just as you finish "one thousand three." What is the smallest following gap you should keep in these conditions?
A follows B on a dark road in rain, with a roadside marker as a counting reference. The card gives A’s existing three-second count without showing a required interval.
Correct answer: Four seconds, the minimum when it is dark or raining
Why
Darkness reduces how far you can see, and rain reduces tire grip, so you need more time to notice a problem and more distance to stop. For this reason, the manual raises the minimum following gap from three seconds to four when it is dark or raining, and to six on ice or snow. Use the same fixed-object count, and ease off the accelerator to open the gap.
