Jordan is 16 and has a Level 2 intermediate license. While driving, Jordan wants to take a routine call through the car's hands-free system. What does West Virginia law say about this call?
Correct answer: It is not allowed; a GDL driver under 18 may use a phone only to call 9-1-1.
Why
West Virginia law bans all use of a wireless communication device while driving for GDL holders under 18 (Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3), even with hands-free equipment. The only exception is a call to 9-1-1. A citation for phone use also restarts the conviction-free period that a GDL driver needs to move up to the next level.
