You back into a parked car with nobody in it. Nobody is hurt. A body shop says the damage to the other car will cost about $1,400 to repair. Must you report this crash to the police?
Correct answer: Yes, at once, because the damage to one owner's property is $1,000 or more
Why
Wisconsin law requires an immediate report to the police when a crash causes an injury or a death, $1,000 or more of damage to the property of one person, or $200 or more of damage to government property such as signs or guardrails. The handbook also tells you to call when a vehicle cannot be moved or a driver seems to be impaired. When you hit an unattended car, you must also find the owner or leave a note with your name and address in the car.
