Vehicle Safety, Documents & TowingStandalone practice
You drive a pickup that tows a camper trailer. Together they are about 40 feet long. On a dry road, what minimum following time does the Wyoming manual call for?
Correct answer: 4 seconds
Why
The Wyoming manual says to allow at least two seconds of following distance for each 20 feet of vehicle length. Towing a boat or trailer adds length and weight, so the combination needs more room to stop. Add more time on wet roads or at night (double), on snow (triple) and on ice (quadruple). Wyoming law also bans following more closely than is reasonable and prudent for the speed, traffic and road.
