The road is wet and slippery, as in this example. Which following-time recommendation should replace the ordinary two-second minimum?
Blue A follows silver B in the eastbound lane on a wet two-way road. Both cars are centred in their lane. Rain and the wet surface indicate reduced grip. The pictured gap does not establish a time interval.
Correct answer: Increase it to at least four seconds, or more if needed
Why
ICBC recommends four seconds of following time in bad weather or on uneven or slippery roads. Ease off smoothly and let the gap grow; do not use the lead vehicle’s lights as a reason to follow closely. Three seconds applies to high-speed roads and at least three behind motorcycles or large vehicles that block your view.
