C is following A too closely. What is a safe response by A?
On a divided road with two eastbound lanes, blue A is in the left lane. Silver C follows A closely, and B is farther ahead. The right lane is empty in the illustrated segment. The opposite carriageway is outside the view. Positions alone do not establish time gaps.
Correct answer: Leave more space ahead and let C pass when safe
Why
You cannot directly control the gap behind. Slow slightly and increase your forward gap so you can brake more gradually; ICBC recommends at least three seconds when a vehicle is following close behind. If a safe opportunity exists, change lanes or pull over to let the tailgater pass. The pictured right lane is assumed clear after A checks mirrors, blind spot and gap and signals. Do not brake-check, speed or make an unchecked lane change.
