A vehicle ahead signals a left turn. There is enough safe space in a lawful traveled lane to its right, without using the ordinary shoulder. May you pass on the right?
Blue A follows silver B, which is preparing to turn left, on a wide paved two-way road. Extra paved room is visible to the right of B. The road edge is marked; no shoulder is depicted.
Correct answer: Yes, if the whole movement is safe and lawful.
Why
A safe pass on the right is allowed when the vehicle ahead is making or indicating a left turn. Other specific cases cover stopped or slow lines in adjacent lanes, sufficiently wide unobstructed one-way streets and qualifying limited-access highways. Do not use an ordinary shoulder as an extra lane; lane designations, signs, signals or markings can provide a specific authorized movement.
