A family plans an ordinary outing in a pickup truck. A 15-year-old offers to sit on the floor of the open bed because the cab is full. No legal exception applies. May the driver carry the child there?
Correct answer: No. A passenger under 16 cannot ride in the pickup bed in these circumstances.
Why
Since June 5, 2026, the pickup-bed age restriction covers passengers under 16. The age provision has limited exceptions for a life-threatening emergency and a legally authorized parade, caravan or exhibition. Separate statutory exemptions also exist for specified operations. This ordinary outing qualifies for none. Arrange a lawful seat and restraint for the child.
