Passing target: 80% (28/35)
A school bus is stopped with red lights flashing on the opposite side of an undivided four-lane highway, with two lanes in each direction. You are approaching in the opposing lanes. Must you stop solely for that bus?
Blue A approaches in the lanes opposite stopped school bus B on a four-lane road. Silver C is behind the bus. Double yellow lines separate directions; a detail shows the flashing red bus lamps.
Correct answer: No, but proceed with caution.
Why
Illinois does not require a vehicle meeting a stopped bus in the opposing lanes to stop when the highway has at least four lanes with at least two in each direction. A median is not required. Traffic traveling in the bus’s direction must still stop for its signals. Always watch for children and respond to any actual danger.
