Passing target: 80% (28/35)
On a four-lane highway with two lanes in your direction, an authorized emergency vehicle is stopped on the right shoulder with flashing lights. How should you pass?
Blue car A approaches a black-and-white police SUV B stopped on the paved right shoulder with red and blue warning lights flashing. Two same-direction travel lanes are visible; the left lane is clear.
Correct answer: Slow down and, if it is safe, change to a lane away from it.
Why
Move to a nonadjacent lane when safe and reduce to a reasonable speed, leaving safe distance until past the scene. If a lane change is unsafe or impossible, slow down and proceed with caution. Heed warnings, be ready to stop, and yield to emergency workers. Never stop alongside to look or take a photograph.
