Passing target: 20/25 correct (TLA practice target)
When overtaking a slower vehicle in a lawful passing area, what is the basic passing path?
Blue A and silver B are in the right of two lanes traveling to the right. A broken white line separates the lanes. The adjacent lane is empty in this snapshot.
Correct answer: Pass on the left and return right only when safely clear.
Why
Pass to the left with safe clearance and return right only when safely clear of the vehicle you passed. The manual advises seeing the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror before returning. For a pass left of the center line, Iowa also requires returning before coming within 300 feet of an oncoming vehicle on a road limited above 30 mph, or 100 feet when the limit is 30 mph or less. You must have enough clear distance before starting.
