Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
Outside a business, rural-residence or residence district, a safe off-road stopping place is practical. Where should you stop?
Correct answer: Completely off the main traveled part of the road.
Why
Stop off the paved or main traveled part when practical. On a paved highway, leave at least 20 feet of clear pavement opposite the stopped vehicle; on an unpaved highway, leave enough clear traveled width for vehicles to pass. The stopped vehicle must be visible from 200 feet in each direction. A vehicle disabled so that stopping there cannot be avoided has a specific exception.
