Passing target: 80% (32/40)
A multilane roadway has two unobstructed travel lanes in your direction. You are in the right lane behind a slower vehicle in the left lane. When may you pass on the right?
A separated freeway carriageway carries two eastbound lanes beside a median; the other carriageway is outside this view. Blue A is in the right lane, while silver B is farther ahead in the left lane. A continuous white edge line separates the travel lanes from the roadside.
Correct answer: When the pass can be made safely within the paved main-traveled roadway.
Why
Louisiana permits a right-side pass on a multilane highway only when it can be made safely. A motor vehicle must not drive off the pavement or main-traveled portion to do so. Other statutory right-pass cases include a vehicle making or about to make a left turn, and a sufficiently wide unobstructed one-way roadway. Each still requires a safe maneuver.
