What stopping clearance does MPI's Driver's Handbook advise at railway crossings in restricted-speed areas and elsewhere?
Blue A approaches an active railway crossing from well back. The card identifies a restricted-speed-area example; no clearance measurement is shown.
Correct answer: At least 5 metres in a restricted-speed area and 15 metres elsewhere.
Why
MPI advises keeping at least 5 metres from the nearest rail in a restricted-speed area and at least 15 metres elsewhere. A restricted-speed area is a defined area, including Winnipeg and urban municipalities, not simply a place where you happen to drive slowly. Obey crossing controls and keep enough room to clear every track. The Act's express 5/15-metre provision applies to specified passenger and hazardous-load vehicles; this question asks the handbook's general driving guidance.
