Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
You drive down an entry ramp into the acceleration lane. Freeway traffic in the right lane moves at about 60 mph, and there are gaps between the cars. How should you use the acceleration lane?
A is at the start of an acceleration lane below freeway traffic. Two silver cars travel in the nearest through lane with a visible gap.
Correct answer: Speed up toward 60 mph as you use it, then signal and move into a safe gap
Why
A merge is safest when your speed is close to the speed of the traffic that you join. Look for your gap early with your mirror and a look over your shoulder while you speed up. Match the traffic, but never go faster than the posted speed limit.
