A short entry ramp has no acceleration lane, and a YIELD sign is posted at its end. Freeway traffic in the right lane is heavy. What should you do?
A approaches an exact U.S. YIELD sign at the end of a short entrance ramp. Heavy traffic crosses directly past the ramp mouth; no acceleration lane follows it.
Correct answer: Slow down or stop if you must, and then enter only when a safe gap comes
Why
On most ramps, an acceleration lane lets you reach freeway speed without a stop. Some ramps have none. There the YIELD sign controls the merge, and a full stop can be the safe choice until a large gap opens. Look for a gap that is long enough for your car to speed up without making freeway drivers brake.
