Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You follow a school bus on a city street. The bus turns on its flashing amber (yellow) lights. It has not stopped yet. What do these lights tell you?
Blue A follows school bus B east on a curbed city street. B is still moving with its amber warning lamps flashing. A separate rear-header detail shows the amber pair lit and the outer red pair dark. No stop position or passing route appears.
Correct answer: The bus will soon stop and show red lights, so slow down and get ready to stop
Why
Use the amber-light time to slow down smoothly, so that you can stop at least 20 feet from the bus. Passing on the right side is especially dangerous, because children get on and off at the door on that side. The 2026 law added the amber-light warning to 169.444, subd. 1.
