Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
You are driving east across Missouri on I-70. What happens to the exit numbers as you go?
Correct answer: They get larger, because exits are numbered from the western state line
Why
Exits are numbered in order from the west or south state line, so the numbers rise as you go east on east-west routes and north on north-south routes. This lets you judge how far away an exit is and notice if you are heading the wrong way. Emergency reference markers along the shoulder every two-tenths of a mile also show your route, direction and location if you need to call for help.
