Vehicle Safety, Documents & TowingStandalone practice
Your older car has a shoulder belt that moves into place by itself when you close the door, and a separate lap belt that you must fasten. What should you do before you drive?
Correct answer: Fasten the lap belt too, so that you cannot slide out under the shoulder belt in a crash.
Why
In a crash there are really three collisions: the vehicle hits something, your body hits the inside of the vehicle, and your organs hit the inside of your body. The manual compares a 30 mph crash without a belt to a fall from a three-story building. An unbelted person can also be thrown into others in the vehicle and hurt or kill them.
