Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a narrow city street with cars parked along the curb, a bicyclist ahead is riding about 3 feet from the parked cars, near the middle of your lane. What should you do?
A follows bicyclist B on a narrow two-way city street. B rides about 3 feet to the left of a row of parked cars beside the right curb.
Correct answer: Stay back, since the rider may keep away from parked cars and their doors
Why
Montana law does not require a bicyclist to ride through hazards at the edge of the road, such as parked cars, debris, or a lane too narrow to share. Many riders ride about 18 to 24 inches into the lane to avoid opened car doors and to discourage unsafe passes. Treat the bicyclist as a slow vehicle: stay back, and pass only when you can move into another lane safely.
