Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
Snow has made the road slippery. You follow a pickup truck at a steady speed. What following distance does the Montana manual suggest?
A follows a pickup on a snow-covered road. A marker beside the right edge supplies a fixed point for counting.
Correct answer: Four seconds or more, since you need more room to stop
Why
The manual also calls for extra space when you follow a motorcycle, pull a trailer, carry a heavy load, or drive in darkness or bad weather. On snow or ice, the same stop can take much more distance than on dry pavement. The extra time lets you brake gently instead of hard, which also helps prevent a skid.
