Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
To check your speed, you pick the farthest object you can see clearly ahead and start counting seconds. You reach the object before you finish counting to four. What does this tell you?
Correct answer: You are going too fast for how far you can see, so you should slow down.
Why
You must always be able to stop within the distance you can see ahead. At night, headlights show about 400 feet, which is about the stopping distance at 50 mph, so this check also warns you when you are overdriving your headlights. Hills, curves, fog and heavy rain shorten your sight distance and call for lower speeds.
