Traffic Signals & Road MarkingsStandalone practice
Red lights start to flash at a railroad crossing ahead. There is no gate. What is the closest point to the nearest rail where you may stop?
A approaches a railroad crossing with flashing red lights on their mast. No crossing gate is shown.
Correct answer: 15 feet from the nearest rail
Why
Flashing lights at a crossing mean that a train is coming. Stop, and stay stopped until the lights stop and you can cross safely. The same 15-foot minimum applies when a gate is lowered, a flagger signals, or a train is plainly visible and close to the crossing.
