A train has just passed the crossing where you are stopped. The gate arm starts to rise, but the red lights are still flashing. What should you do?
A waits before a two-track railroad crossing. Its striped gate arm has begun to rise, and the red warning lamps remain active on the mast.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the arm is fully raised and the lights have stopped flashing.
Why
Flashing lights and a lowered gate tell you that a train is coming, and at a crossing with more than one track, another train may follow the first. When the lights begin to flash, stop no closer than 15 feet from the nearest rail. After the gate is fully raised and the lights stop, look both ways again before you cross.
