Traffic Signals & Road MarkingsStandalone practice
You approach an intersection at 30 mph. The light changes from green to steady yellow. You have enough room to stop smoothly before the stop line. What should you do?
The middle circular yellow lamp is illuminated on a three-lamp traffic signal.
Correct answer: Brake smoothly and stop before you reach the stop line.
Why
A steady yellow light gives a short warning before the light turns red. If you are so close that a sudden stop would be unsafe, continue through the intersection with care. A steady yellow arrow gives the same warning for a protected turn, so a driver who is already turning should clear the intersection.
