You are driving on a busy city street and do not plan to turn or change lanes. How often does the Nebraska manual say you should check the traffic behind you?
Correct answer: At least every 10 seconds, and also before you change lanes, back up, or slow down.
Why
Regular mirror checks tell you who is behind you before you need to brake or move, so a tailgater or a fast car in the next lane does not surprise you. This habit is part of defensive driving, together with looking 10 to 15 seconds ahead and to the sides. Mirrors do not show every area, so still glance over your shoulder at the blind spot before a lane change.
